Which CSCS card should I apply for?

Published: September 28, 2024

When it comes to working on construction sites in the UK, it’s important to have the right CSCS card for the job you’re there to carry out.

CSCS cards provide proof that workers have the appropriate training and qualifications for their role, thereby helping to improve standards and safety in UK construction

The CSCS Card Finder is designed to help you navigate the process of selecting the appropriate card for your specific role as well as the qualification you have or are registered for.

What is a CSCS Card?

While the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card is not a legislative requirement, most principal contractors and major housebuilders require workers on their sites to carry one relevant to their occupation. Holding a Labourer card when in a skilled occupation, for instance, could see you refused access to site.

The card provides employers with proof that the individual has the necessary training and qualifications to perform their job safely. However, with different types of CSCS cards available, depending on skills, experience and occupation, it’s crucial that everyone has the right card for the right job.

How to use CSCS Card Finder

Card Finder helps to confirm which CSCS card you need to apply for and which CITB Health, safety and environment test you need to pass. This can be done simply by entering your occupation or qualification and following the steps on screen. Similarly, members of professional bodies applying for the Professionally Qualified Person card can enter the organisation’s name or their level of membership (abbreviated or in full).

If you need to book a CITB Health, safety and environment test, this cannot be done via CSCS and should instead be booked via CITB. Alternatives to the test are listed here.

Occupations not covered by CSCS

The CSCS card scheme covers a wide range of construction roles, however many occupations are not included under its scheme and are instead covered by members of the CSCS Alliance.

CSCS is one of 38 CSCS Alliance card schemes that meet Construction Leadership Council recommendations and are therefore permitted to display the CSCS logo.

All cards carrying the logo can be verified using CSCS Smart Check and should be accepted at site gates, provided they are valid an in-date.

Why getting the right CSCS card matters

As required under the new Building Safety Regime, all individuals undertaking a recognised construction occupation must be competent, which means having the appropriate Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours (SKEB) for their occupation. Clients and contractors are responsible for ensuring that individuals carrying out work on their behalf are competent.

Where a construction worker holds the right card for their occupation, it provides assurance that they have achieved the recognised qualification, and any additional specified training required for that occupation, which demonstrates the Skills and Knowledge elements of competence.
